Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has implemented LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology to improve road asset management and enhance digital twin platforms. The system aims to optimize maintenance strategies by providing precise, real-time data.

LiDAR significantly outperforms traditional inspection methods, offering 95% accuracy and the ability to assess up to 80 km of roads daily—far exceeding the 3 km coverage of manual checks. The technology also allows inspections at speeds of 30–100 km/h without disrupting traffic.

The initiative supports Dubai’s goal of becoming a smart and sustainable city, ensuring road safety and infrastructure longevity. By automating assessments of assets like traffic signals and lighting poles, LiDAR reduces risks associated with manual inspections while improving maintenance planning.

This advancement aligns with RTA’s strategy to integrate innovative technologies for efficient and sustainable road network management.
