In a major transition, the municipality of Modena in Italy has awarded the management of its public lighting and traffic light systems to Edison under a nine-year contract valued at more than €52 million. The tender included 32,000 light points across the city.
The new contract will also task Edison with advancing the LED-conversion of the network (currently around 85 %) and deploying smart lighting features for pedestrian crossings and cycle paths.
The previous provider, Hera Luce (which had managed the system for decades via its predecessor arrangements), was supplanted after a competitive process where technical scores were tightly grouped: Edison achieved 65.43 points, Hera Luce 64.63, and another bidder, Engie Servizi, 63.83. According to available documentation, the financial component ultimately made the difference.
The formal agreement is still pending ratification following the tender outcome, after which Edison will assume full operational responsibility.
