The Finnish city of Espoo is piloting a new system to provide real-time weather data for cyclists and pedestrians, aiming to improve safety during winter conditions. As part of the city’s Sustainable Future Districts program, five weather sensors and stations will be installed along key cycling routes by autumn 2025.

Developed by Mellenium Oy and Teede Tehnokeskus AS, the compact sensors blend into the road surface and lampposts, offering localized weather updates. The data will be accessible via a dedicated website and social media, helping users plan their commutes.

Four sensors are already in place with a fifth set to be installed soon. The project will assess how real-time weather information influences travel choices, particularly cycling.

The pilot, running from autumn 2025, will also evaluate the system’s effectiveness in supporting year-round active mobility. If successful, the model could be expanded to other cities.
