Granada City Council is seeking €8 million in funding to replace 7,000 conventional streetlights with advanced LED technology equipped with remote control capabilities. The project is expected to save over €1 million annually on energy costs while enhancing lighting management across the city.
The new LED system will feature a point-to-point remote management system, allowing real-time monitoring and control of streetlights. This technology will enable quicker fault detection, optimized energy consumption, and improved lighting quality, contributing to safer and more efficient public spaces.
Currently, Granada operates 35,915 streetlights, with 13,576 already converted to LED, representing 37.8% of the total. Replacing the additional 7,000 lights will increase the number of LED streetlights to 20,500, covering nearly 60% of the city’s lighting network.
The switch to LED technology is projected to reduce energy consumption by 78%, significantly lowering the city’s carbon footprint. The initiative supports Granada’s sustainability goals and aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) outlined in its Urban Agenda. The investment is expected to pay for itself within eight years through energy savings.
