Greece Launches National Wildfire Monitoring System

Greece’s Ministry of Digital Governance has announced a €20 million investment in a wildfire management system using OroraTech’s technology. The project includes four thermal satellites and ground systems to monitor wildfires across Greece, implemented by the European Space Agency and led by the Greek Ministry of Digital Governance and the Hellenic Space Center.

The contract was won by OroraTech, a Munich-based company specializing in infrared satellite data, in an open tender by the European Space Agency. The system will link directly to Greek emergency services, with collaboration from Greek universities and industry. OroraTech plans significant investment in Greece, including an operations hub in Athens.

Greece’s rugged terrain and numerous islands necessitate advanced fire detection technologies. This initiative aims to address the increasing frequency and severity of wildfires.
