Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW), the largest three-service municipal utility in the U.S., has selected Nokia to deploy the country’s first standalone private 5G wireless network for a municipal utility.

The network will support MLGW’s grid modernization efforts across Memphis and Shelby County, Tennessee, enhancing electric, gas, and water service delivery for over 420,000 customers.

Nokia’s solution includes AirScale radio access, 5G Core Enterprise, microwave backhaul, and NetGuard cybersecurity tools, providing secure, high-performance communications. The network is expected to enable real-time grid monitoring, automation, remote operations, and future-ready capabilities such as electric vehicle integration and connected mobility.
