Riverside Public Utilities (RPU) is advancing its grid modernization efforts by replacing 80,000 legacy meters with an advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) system. The upgrade, part of RPU’s Utility 2.0 initiative launched in 2019, aims to improve infrastructure resilience, sustainability, and operational efficiency.
The utility previously used encoder receiver transmitter (ERT) technology to automate meter readings before transitioning to a full AMI system. The new phase, supported by Tantalus Systems’ TRUConnect™ solution, represents the largest ERT-to-AMI migration in the company’s history.
The phased approach allows RPU to modernize its grid while optimizing costs and minimizing disruptions. The upgrade aligns with California’s broader push for reliable and sustainable utility operations amid growing regulatory and environmental demands.
