Slovenia’s highway operator (DARS) is partnering with Q-Free, a global provider of intelligent transportation solutions to deploy a Cooperative Intelligent Transport System (C-ITS) in Ljubljana. The system will deliver real-time traffic alerts, such as accidents, construction zones, and wrong-way driver warnings, to compatible Volkswagen vehicles.
The project includes 25 roadside units along Ljubljana’s major ring road and five mobile units for temporary use in work zones. This builds on a previous 2018 pilot program between Q-Free and DARS. Slovenia’s strategic location as a transit hub has led to rising traffic volumes, increasing the need for advanced traffic management solutions.
The agreement also includes an eight-year maintenance commitment. Volkswagen is among the first automakers to integrate such roadside communication capabilities, with other manufacturers expected to adopt similar technology.
