The Provincial Council of Soria in Spain has held a meeting with local councils involved in a European-funded water digitalization initiative, backed by an investment exceeding €12 million. The project, part of the PERTE water program, aims to modernize water management across 120 municipalities, covering 300 population centers. Key measures include installing smart meters and implementing remote management systems to promote responsible water usage and reduce leaks.
The project is divided into two phases: the first, managed by municipal company Tragsa, focuses on remote management, while the second, more technologically advanced phase, will be put out to tender. The Provincial Council is working to secure funding solutions, ensuring smaller municipalities are not excluded due to budget constraints. Municipal contributions are capped at 16% of subsidized funds to support broader participation.
Approximately 17,000 existing meters, representing 30-35% of Soria’s total, will be upgraded to smart meters. The initiative primarily targets municipalities with over 1,000 residents, but efforts are underway to include smaller towns through additional funding and participation in the third edition of the PERTE water program.
