Southern Water has awarded a £338 million (ex VAT) 20-year contract to Horizon Water Infrastructure Ltd to upgrade more than one million meters by 2030.
Starting in AMP8, the programme will be delivered by the Horizon Water Infrastructure Southern Water Alliance (HWI SWS Alliance), comprising Horizon, SUEZ, and M Group Water. Operating under a Metering-as-a-Service model, the Alliance will own and manage the smart AMI-enabled meter assets, providing installation, maintenance, and network management across Southern Water’s supply area for both household and non-household premises.
The project will replace Southern Water’s existing ~934,000 household and 52,000 non-household meters, with the Alliance supplying 15-year warranted smart meters, undertaking complex and standard installations, and managing communications and performance over the contract’s lifespan.
Horizon Water Infrastructure, now part of a KKR-backed group formed through its merger with Smart Metering Systems, Horizon Energy Infrastructure, and Smart Meter Assets, was one of four bidders for the contract.
