Spain’s Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT), in collaboration with the Spanish Road Association (AEC), has introduced a new set of technological and infrastructure-based measures aimed at reducing traffic accidents caused by animals. The initiative responds to a sharp rise in such incidents—doubling over the last decade to more than 36,000 cases in 2024, involving species like wild boar, deer, and foxes.

The strategy includes the deployment of thermal sensors, virtual fences with light and sound deterrents, and LED warning signs, already active in regions like Girona and Castilla y León. Additional solutions target both drivers and wildlife, including V2X in-vehicle alerts, ultrasonic repellents, olfactory barriers, and ecological crossings like vegetated overpasses and tunnels adapted for various species. Vendors for these technologies have not yet been disclosed.

As part of the 2030 Road Safety Strategy, the DGT is also identifying high-risk areas, known as TEFIVA (sections with high frequency of animal-related incidents), with 150 segments already flagged in 2023. While pilot tests are underway, data on the impact of these new tools on reducing accidents is still pending.

The main vendor involved in this initiative is Kelias Movilidad, a Basque company based in Zamudio. They’ve developed an automated system that detects wildlife on roadways using thermal and infrared sensors, then activates warning lights to alert drivers. It operates on solar power and 4G connectivity, has been tested in regions like Tarragona and France’s Haute‑Savoie, and reportedly reduces animal‑related accidents by up to 70%. So far, no additional suppliers have been publicly named in connection with the DGT/AEC project.
