Southwestern Electric Power Co (SWEPCO) is initiating a two-year program to install 234,000 smart meters across north and central Louisiana, starting in the Shreveport-Bossier City area in October. These smart meters, replacing outdated ones, should offer customers more control over energy usage, help in creating energy-efficient habits, and facilitate power restoration. The rollouts, part of SWEPCO’s grid modernization effort, will continue through 2025. The project will be funded by a monthly surcharge for customers, with an option to opt-out for a one-time cost and a recurring monthly fee.
