Gatekeeper Systems Inc. has been awarded a pilot contract by the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) to implement its Automated Streetcar Enforcement System (ASES). The AI-powered solution aims to enhance safety by detecting and ticketing motorists who fail to stop for streetcars with open passenger doors.

The ASES system utilizes AI-assisted video analytics to identify incidents, capture license plates, and automate ticket processing. The initial phase will deploy the technology on four streetcars, with the contract valued at approximately $460,000. The TTC, North America’s third-largest public transit system, operates streetcars in mixed-traffic conditions, where passengers often cross traffic lanes to board. Current regulations permit the use of video technology to enforce traffic violations involving streetcars.

Gatekeeper Systems specializes in intelligent video and data solutions for public transportation and smart cities, focusing on improving safety for passengers and transit personnel. The TTC serves around 1.7 million daily commuters in Toronto and surrounding areas, maintaining the largest public transit system in Canada.

The pilot project aligns with efforts to address safety concerns and reduce incidents of vehicles passing streetcars with open doors.
