United Utilities has unveiled plans to roll out over a million smart meters across the North West by 2030 as part of a significant infrastructure transformation. Arqiva has been chosen as the lead partner for this project The awarded framework, valued at approximately £250 million, extends until 2030, with an option for an additional five years.
The initiative is a cornerstone of United Utilities’ long-term strategy to modernize water and wastewater infrastructure in the region. Over the next five years, the project will include the installation of new smart meters for households and the replacement of all meters for business customers. By leveraging advanced metering technology, the company aims to enhance its ability to manage water resources, reduce consumption, and minimize leakage across its network.
Arqiva’s responsibilities under the contract include sourcing, installing, and commissioning smart meters and associated devices, as well as developing and maintaining the necessary data communications network. This infrastructure should provide detailed insights into water usage patterns, enabling more efficient water management and supporting sustainability goals.
