Veolia Rolls Out Smart Bins in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes to Improve Waste Sorting

Veolia has deployed four smart waste bins in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region as part of its national rollout of 40 intelligent bins across France. These units are equipped with optical recognition cameras supplied by the French startup Lixo and an AI system developed by Veolia, enabling real-time waste composition analysis of over 30 categories for business clients.

The bins are targeted at corporate clients and come with a tailored support package including adapted containers, updated signage, staff training and collection-frequency adjustments, aiming to boost sorting at source and enhance recycling rates.

The initiative also helps businesses meet obligations under the decree Décret 2021‑1199 which requires annual waste characterisation. Automated, traceable and reliable sorting data is provided as part of the service.

Although specific investment cost for the regional deployment was not disclosed, Veolia reports that the full national fleet of 40 intelligent bins will serve more than 12 000 industrial and commercial clients.
