Basque-based ZIV has secured its largest-ever contract through a consortium with Itron, clinching an agreement with Greece’s HEDNO (Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator). The deal calls for the deployment of nearly one million smart meters along with the necessary data collection and management infrastructure, over an initial three-year term renewable for up to five years.
Under the broader grid modernization programme of HEDNO, Itron will deliver its Enterprise Edition Meter Data Management (MDM) system to manage 7.7 million meters, and its Utility IQ headend system to integrate the new devices—designed and produced by ZIV.
This smart metering rollout is part of a large-scale national initiative estimated to cost about €546 million, of which the European Investment Bank is financing approximately €91 million for the first phase covering 3.12 million meters between 2023 and 2026.
The contract is expected to stimulate employment around ZIV’s operations in the Basque region and among its local suppliers.
