Athens is deploying a new generation of smart traffic enforcement cameras that automatically detect and fine drivers for speeding and red-light violations. Unlike older systems, the new setup enables fully automated processing and issuing of penalties without manual intervention.
A total of 2,000 units are planned for high-risk locations across the capital, including Kifissias with Ethnikis Antistaseos and Mesogeion with Halandriou. The initiative follows a sharp rise in traffic offenses, with over 38,000 violations and 13 road fatalities recorded in June.
While full vendor details for the large-scale deployment remain unconfirmed, the city has previously used enforcement technology from Italian firm Tattile and infrastructure integration by Greek provider Arpyan in pilot installations.
