The Avilés City Council is moving forward with plans to reduce energy consumption and modernize urban services as part of its smart city initiative. The council has applied for funding from Spain’s Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE) to replace 7,470 streetlights with energy-efficient models.
The project, which requires an €8.5 million investment, includes installing 7,923 remote-management nodes in new and existing lights, along with 3,158 external nodes. Additionally, 220 damaged lampposts will be replaced with fiber supports, and 3 kilometers of cabling will be upgraded.
Once completed, the upgrades are expected to cut annual energy consumption from 6,080,897 kWh to 2,453,008 kWh, saving approximately €532,460 per year. The city currently has only 59 remotely managed lights.
The IDAE funding comes from a €155 million national energy efficiency fund. The project aims to reduce lighting costs by 60%, supporting Avilés’ transition toward a more sustainable and digitally advanced city.
