Drones to Monitor Illegal Waste Dumping in Ventimiglia

The Italian town of Ventimiglia will deploy seven drones to combat illegal waste dumping, funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). The initiative, supported by the Ministry of Ecological Transition, aims to enhance waste management and environmental protection near the Franco-Italian border.

Equipped with advanced surveillance technology, the drones will monitor hard-to-reach areas and help authorities quickly identify illegal waste sites. Officials emphasize a zero-tolerance approach to environmental violations.

However, some residents have raised concerns over privacy and data protection, questioning whether aerial surveillance could infringe on private property rights. Others have questioned the project’s cost and staffing requirements, as operating the drones will require trained personnel.
