Kansas Allocates $4.5 Million for AI and Drone-Based Transportation Projects

Kansas is investing in advanced technology to modernize its transportation systems. Over $4.5 million in state funding will support 20 projects under the Kansas Department of Transportation’s (KDOT) Innovative Technology Program.

The initiatives focus on AI-driven infrastructure assessments, traffic management, and drone technology. Key projects include:

  • City of Wichita and Vivacity Labs: $187,500 to improve multi-modal safety using advanced AI and sensor technology.
  • City of Halstead: $75,750 for an AI-powered street inventory and condition assessment.
  • City of Maize: Nearly $210,000 combined for AI-based traffic signals and local street analysis.
  • City of Park City: $49,125 to evaluate its transportation network using AI tools.
  • City of Gardner and City of Edgerton: AI-driven pavement and asset management systems.

Additional funding will enhance multi-modal safety in Wichita and support aviation research at Salina Regional Airport. The program received over $5 million in applications, with selections based on innovation, feasibility, and community impact.
