Manila based utility Meralco has entered into a partnership with Itron, Inc. to deploy advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) across its franchise area in the Philippines. The initial phase will cover approximately 73,000 endpoints in Metro Manila, with the system supporting near-real-time, two-way communication between operations and customer endpoints.
The AMI network uses an open IPv6-based system combining mesh and cellular connectivity, and is designed to accommodate multiple meter brands, allowing Meralco to scale without vendor lock-in.
This rollout is part of Meralco’s broader programme to install at least 11 million smart meters over the next decade. The project has been included within a proposed capital expenditure plan of roughly PHP 215 billion for the 2026-2029 regulatory period. Itron is supplying its “Gen5” AMI solution, as part of its Grid Edge Intelligence portfolio.
