The city of Montauban has entered the operational phase of a new system based on the Vizzia platform to detect and sanction illegal waste dumping via artificial intelligence. After a pilot phase, the municipality is deploying autonomous, moveable cameras in hotspot areas to complement local police efforts and issue direct fines to offenders.
Vizzia, a French clean-tech start-up, provides the detection software and camera hardware. Its solution analyzes image data to trigger alerts when illicit deposits are made, enabling automated processing of violations. The company recently closed a €16 million funding round to scale its operations and expand across Europe.
While details of Montauban’s specific contract—such as investment cost or number of cameras, have not been disclosed publicly, Vizzia claims its systems can reduce illegal dumping by up to 90 % in some municipalities.
At a national level, recent studies estimate that one in four French residents engages in illegal waste dumping, a behavior often linked to accessibility issues or visibility motives. The Montauban deployment joins broader efforts across France to apply AI, legal enforcement, and citizen reporting to better manage urban cleanliness
