In the US, Puerto Rico’s Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (PRASA) will upgrade nearly 1.4 million mechanical water meters to smart meters with a $711 million grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). This initiative, aimed at enhancing resilience following Hurricane María’s 2017 devastation, includes the adoption of ultrasonic meters with advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) that enable remote readings and real-time data. These meters, which do not require filters, offer greater accuracy, durability, maintenance efficiency, and improved responsiveness to potential breakdowns. The project also features a pilot phase to select the most suitable metering technology.
