Water companies in England and Wales must pay back £157.6 million to customers after failing to meet regulatory standards on pollution, leaks, and supply interruptions, Ofwat announced. This fine will be passed on to millions of customers via lower bills next year, with Thames Water facing the largest penalty of £56.8 million. Other companies, including Anglian Water and Southern Water, are also required to return millions.
Only four companies, such as United Utilities and Severn Trent Water, avoided penalties and instead will raise bills as part of a performance-based incentive system. This latest fine follows a £168 million penalty imposed in August, as public frustration grows over the sector’s environmental impact and rising costs.

Watch as we uncover the project’s role in addressing wastewater challenges and enhancing digital solutions across the UK.
