The Wilmington City Council (Delaware) has approved a $3.7 million request from the Wilmington Police Department for advanced surveillance technology. This decision enables the integration and upgrade of the Fusus Enterprise System alongside Axon Enterprise‘s in-car cameras. The Fusus system collects real-time video from various public locations and communicates directly with police forces, enhancing their ability to monitor and respond to incidents quickly. This technology allows for the streaming of live video, uses automatic license-plate readers, and can integrate feeds from drones, aircraft, and community video sources. While this technology promises improved safety and crime-solving efficiency, it has also sparked privacy concerns due to its broad access to citywide cameras. The system’s capabilities include pulling video feeds with artificial intelligence and integrating them into a unified surveillance network, raising questions about the balance between security and privacy.
