Yorkshire Water has partnered with network operator Netmore to connect 1.3 million water meters across the Yorkshire region to LoRaWAN. This initiative aims to upgrade meters reaching the end of their operational life, enhancing data collection and water management. LoRaWAN networks use low-frequency radio spectrum (sub-1GHz bands like 868MHz or 915MHz) to provide low-power, wide-area data connections, making them ideal for linking IoT sensors.
The contract, which awaits final approval from Ofwat in December 2024, is set for an initial five-year term, with data services extending until 2045. It includes the delivery, installation, and maintenance of the smart meters. This program complements ongoing smart metering efforts that began in 2022, when Netmore was awarded AMI frameworks by Yorkshire Water to provide LoRaWAN network services and meters for up to 360,000 households, including new developments.
Morrison Water Services, under contract with Netmore, will manage the planning, scheduling, and meter exchange, beginning in South Yorkshire in 2025.
