Mannheim is trialing an autonomous cleaning robot developed by German startup Angsa Robotics to improve maintenance in public green spaces. The robot is being tested in a six-month pilot project led by Stadtraumservice Mannheim at locations including the Rhine promenade, Neckarwiese, and Luisenpark.
Equipped with AI and advanced cameras, Angsa detects and collects small debris like cigarette butts, bottle caps, and plastic scraps. Unlike conventional sweepers, it operates on uneven terrain and grassy areas, covering around 1,000 square meters per hour with an eight-hour battery life. The robot also records georeferenced litter data to help identify pollution hotspots and optimize cleaning efforts.
The project supports Mannheim’s smart city initiatives, focusing on sustainable, data-driven solutions. Results from the trial will inform future improvements in urban cleanliness management.
