Vodafone España has signed an agreement with Arval, a vehicle leasing company, to install 200,000 connected V16 beacons in its fleet. The initiative aims to enhance road safety and reduce risks associated with breakdowns or accidents.

The V16 beacons, which replace traditional emergency triangles, are equipped with IoT technology and a SIM card connected to Vodafone’s NB-IoT network. This ensures nationwide connectivity, even in areas with limited coverage. The beacons emit a yellow light visible from over a kilometer away in all directions and weather conditions. They also send geolocation signals to the DGT 3.0 platform, alerting nearby drivers through navigation systems and mobility apps, enabling preventive actions.

The connected beacons eliminate the need for drivers to exit their vehicles to place warning triangles, a process that can take up to eight minutes and pose safety risks. They maintain constant communication with the DGT and other vehicles, creating a connected network to improve road safety.

Starting in 2026, the use of connected and certified V16 beacons will become mandatory for all vehicles. Arval is offering the devices to its customers ahead of the DGT’s requirement. Until January 1, 2026, the beacons can be used on highways, while traditional triangles remain mandatory on secondary roads.
