New Project (Full-Scale)AustraliaState of New South WalesAusgridEnergyEV Charging
Published on August 26, 2024
Ausgrid is set to deploy kerbside EV chargers on power poles across New South Wales, aiming to make electric vehicle charging more convenient and affordable for residents, especially those without access to home charging stations. This initiative targets neighborhoods lacking driveways or garages, as well as apartment dwellers who face restrictions on installing personal charging equipment. These new pole-mounted chargers can deliver between 7kW to 22kW, allowing for a full charge in approximately four hours.
In response to the increased load on the electricity grid due to the rising adoption of electric vehicles, Ausgrid is also investing in community batteries. These large storage units, capable of holding as much energy as eight standard electric cars, allow solar energy collected during the day to be used in the evening, benefiting those without direct access to solar installations. This strategy not only supports individual consumers but also alleviates pressure on the overall energy network, reducing energy costs for all connected customers.
Looking forward, Ausgrid is exploring innovative solutions to expand this infrastructure, including government grants and partnerships with third parties to increase the number of kerbside chargers. The long-term vision includes the integration of Vehicle-to-Grid technologies, allowing EVs to feed power back into the grid, thus enhancing grid stability and supporting renewable energy usage.
