City of Messina Invests €1.7 Million in Tech-Driven Waste Management

The city of Messina is advancing its waste management system with a €1.76 million investment in technology to improve recycling in residential buildings. The funding, approved under the Pn Metro Plus 2021-2027 program, will support the installation of smart waste collection systems in select condominiums. These systems will feature user recognition, waste monitoring, and data management via a digital platform, aiming to reduce errors in waste sorting and cut down on non-recyclable waste.

The initiative, part of the ME2.2.6.1.a project, is a collaboration between the city administration and Messina Servizi Bene Comune. It aligns with broader goals of ecological transition and smart city development, in line with European circular economy and sustainability targets. The project is expected to enhance recycling rates, lower disposal costs, and provide better services for residents. A pilot phase will begin in several large condominiums, marking a step toward a more modern and traceable waste management model.
