US Ignite New Pilot Program to Convert Streetlights into High-Speed WiFi Hubs

A new initiative led by US Ignite and Signify (formerly Philips Lighting) will allow U.S. communities to test technology that converts existing streetlights into high-speed wireless networks. The Brightening Smart Communities with Innovation Pilot Program aims to improve internet access, public safety, transportation, and environmental monitoring.

Signify’s BrightSites technology enables streetlights to function as gigabit-speed communication hubs without costly fiber trenching. Fort Lauderdale, selected in an earlier phase, will begin its pilot this summer. Other interested communities must apply by May 16, 2025.

Selected participants will receive equipment, technical support, and six months to implement solutions tailored to local needs. The program highlights cost-efficient and sustainable urban connectivity.
