Vila-real City Council has applied for funding from Spain’s Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE) to replace 3,354 streetlights in industrial and peripheral zones. The project, managed by the Public Services Department, has an estimated cost of €1.63 million (excluding taxes) and could save €431,515 annually in electricity expenses.

The initiative is part of a broader plan to modernize the city’s entire public lighting system, aiming to reduce energy consumption, light pollution, and improve urban lighting quality. If approved, the new smart lighting system would adjust brightness based on weather, traffic, and pedestrian activity.

A decision on the funding is expected by June 21. If granted, the upgrades could begin in 2026, with repayment to IDAE scheduled over ten years. The project aligns with sustainability goals and could bring long-term economic benefits to the municipality.
