The Basque Government has announced a project to expand the public Internet of Things (IoT) network across Euskadi, aiming to connect over 300,000 sensors by 2028. The initiative, led by Itelazpi, the region’s public telecommunications company, seeks to enhance data-driven decision-making through wireless sensor networks.
Currently, the network covers 68% of the region with 362 coverage points and 210,654 connected sensors. The plan is to increase coverage to 90% by deploying 500 coverage points. The IoT network uses LoRaWAN technology, enabling applications such as smart water metering, environmental monitoring, and urban management.
Since its initial rollout in 2018, the network has supported projects with municipalities and public entities, including temperature control in social housing, early fire detection in waste containers, and livestock tracking. Future applications may include traffic management, air quality monitoring, and infrastructure maintenance.
The expansion is part of a broader effort to modernize public services and promote sustainability through digitalization. The Basque Government encourages local institutions to adopt the network for improved efficiency and innovation.
