Glasgow City Council is launching a 12-month pilot of AI-powered traffic signals along Pollokshaws Road, funded by a £1.27 million grant from the Scottish Government’s Bus Infrastructure Fund.

More than 20 junctions will be fitted with smart signals that use real-time and historical traffic data to prioritise buses, aiming to reduce delays especially during peak times and major events.

The trial builds on a smaller test conducted last year which achieved journey time reductions of up to 50%. If successful, the scheme could be extended to other routes in the city.

Alongside the AI signaling pilot, the funding will support design work for several infrastructure projects: the Pollokshaws Road Bus Corridor (including extended bus lanes and a segregated busway), the Paisley Road West Bus and Active Travel Corridor, and improvements to Hope Street involving upgraded junctions, crossings, and bus shelters.

Current publicly available news and official sources did not name the external vendor or supplier providing the AI technology for the Pollokshaws Road pilot in Glasgow. Although First Bus is a major operator and project partner in associated bus infrastructure improvements, neither Glasgow City Council nor Transport Scotland has publicly disclosed the name of the AI technology provider for the traffic signal initiative as of September 2025.
