SmokeD, a wildfire detection system developer initiated the Austin Wildfire Detection Project. This project aims to protect Austin by spotting fires before they escalate. The AI-powered detection system uses optical sensors for fire location within a 10-mile radius. Devices on high masts capture images, and upon detecting smoke or flames, send alerts to users within about 10 minutes. SmokeD is installing devices on Austin’s American Tower systems, which will span 41 towers covering an area housing over 1.5 million residents.
