The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) has announced the opening of applications for stage 1 of its ongoing Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation (SMART) grants program, an initiative that is now in its third year.

The SMART program is designed to enhance transportation systems and safety through cutting-edge technologies. With a budget of $500 million, the initiative aims to support the development and deployment of advanced technologies across the U.S. transportation landscape. So far, the program has allocated $148 million to 93 diverse projects across 39 states.

The current funding opportunity focuses on a range of technological areas, including:

  1. Connected vehicles
  2. Delivery and Logistics
  3. Sensors and traffic signals
  4. Smart grids
  5. System integration
  6. Automated coordination
  7. Innovative aviation

Applications for this phase are due by 5:00 PM Eastern on July 12, 2024, with a preparatory webinar scheduled for May 28. This round will primarily fund stage 1 planning and prototyping projects, with successful applicants having the opportunity to progress to stage 2 implementation grants, potentially receiving up to $15 million per project.
