In Qatar, the Ministry of Municipality has officially launched the first phase of the Smart Cities Solutions Project. This initiative includes a smart waste management system, a comprehensive vehicle management and tracking system, and a central operations command platform, as part of the Ministry’s 2024-2030 strategy aimed at urban enhancement and digital transformation.

The technology employed in this project monitors the movement and compliance of over 1,000 municipal vehicles, including their routes, historical performance, and maintenance needs, leveraging an advanced wireless tracking system. It integrates specialized electronic sensors installed on 7,571 waste containers and 39 waste transport vehicles, which communicate data through a private IoT network to the central platform. This platform uses AI and big data analytics to optimize routes and task distribution, enhancing efficiency and reducing operational costs.

The system’s AI algorithms automatically identify and schedule waste collection for full containers, ensuring optimal route planning for vehicles to minimize travel distance, fuel consumption, and environmental impact. Expected outcomes include significant reductions in air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and operational costs, while improving public health conditions and traffic congestion during peak hours. The project, starting in Al Wakrah Municipality, is set to expand across all municipalities.
