Niagara Falls, New York, has approved a $6.6 million contract to takeover and upgrade its street lighting to energy-efficient LEDs, involving the installation of smart city technology with sensors for real-time data collection. This move, managed by Wendel, a firm specializing in architecture, engineering, energy efficiency, and construction management, aims to cut energy costs by 50% and enhance urban management. This contract marks a significant step toward modernizing the city’s infrastructure, aligning with New York State’s push towards sustainable development. The project is expected to save Niagara Falls $700,000 annually in energy and maintenance, though the specific number of lights being upgraded was not disclosed. By assuming control over its street lighting infrastructure, Niagara Falls is set to achieve long-term cost savings, which can be reinvested into other critical city projects.
