AI cameras developed by Hayden AI are targeting illegally parked vehicles on all Alameda-Contra Costa (California) Transit lines, to improve bus lane enforcement. The new bus-mounted camera system is issuing warnings, with $110 fines set to start on October 7. During a trial phase, the system, which detects violations at bus stops and in bus lanes, has already proven effective. It replaced an older manual system, identifying over 1,100 potential violations in six weeks, leading to 787 citations—a significant increase compared to the 22 citations from the previous cameras. This technology sends violation footage, including a 10-second video clip and the offender’s license plate, directly to law enforcement for review.
In Los Angeles, the LA Metro is also set to deploy Hayden AI cameras on buses to monitor and automatically fine drivers obstructing bus lanes. After a 60-day grace period, fines will start at $293 for first-time offenders, escalating to $406 for subsequent violations. This initiative, which rolls out in two stages starting with specific bus lines, aims to address mobility issues and ensure faster, safer transit services without intending to generate revenue. According to LA Metro, based on 2021 test runs, over 100,000 tickets are expected annually. The program will boost enforcement efficiency, vital as LADOT 2024-2025 budget cuts over 50 traffic officer positions. The program is expected to officially rollout in November.
