Singapore will expand its smart light system, currently in use for street lamps, to cover cycling paths, overhead bridges, bus stops, and taxi stands by mid-2025. This system, first implemented for over 110,000 street lamps in September 2023, allows remote control based on weather and lighting needs.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) plans to extend the Remote Control and Monitoring System (RCMS) to 350km of walkways, 525km of cycling paths, 560 pedestrian overhead bridges, and 4,400 bus stops and taxi stands. Currently, 30% of lights at these facilities are already equipped with RCMS.
The system saves about €4.91 million annually in energy, cutting usage by 8.75 million kWh—equivalent to powering 2,000 homes for a year. It also reduces maintenance time by 4,200 hours and public feedback on faults by 80%.
The RCMS installation for street lamps began in 2018 and cost €54.5 million to implement, covering 25,000 lamps in central Singapore.
