Greece has launched its “Smart Bridges” program, beginning with 36 projects in Athens, aimed at enhancing bridge safety through real-time structural health monitoring (RTSHM). The initiative integrates cutting-edge digital systems that monitor key structural parameters such as axial strain, vibrations, water levels, and temperature. These measurements are transmitted to a centralized platform for continuous analysis, enabling early detection of potential structural issues and supporting data-driven decision-making for timely maintenance.

Key contractors include Globitel, which is leading the implementation in the Attica region under a contract worth €12.7 million, with an additional option for €6.37 million. The systems use a combination of advanced sensors and real-time communication networks, allowing engineers to monitor the impact of external factors, such as traffic loads and environmental changes, on the integrity of bridges.

The program will roll out across other regions of Greece with contracts awarded to OTE, TERNA, and Globitel, ensuring that the majority of the country’s aging bridges are equipped with state-of-the-art monitoring technology.
