Thailand is enhancing security in its tourist hubs by deploying an AI-powered smart city surveillance system. The initiative, developed in partnership with UK-based Gorilla Technology Group, aims to improve safety through facial recognition, license plate tracking, and crowd density monitoring. The system, which integrates with international databases claims to boasts a 98% accuracy rate in threat detection.
The move follows the recent kidnapping of Chinese actor Wang Xing in Bangkok, who was later rescued from a scam center in Myanmar. The incident has raised concerns about human trafficking and transnational crime in the region, impacting tourism.
The five-year project, supported by the British government, will expand to key tourist destinations and is expected to create over 100 new jobs. Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra recently released an AI-generated video in Mandarin to reassure tourists of improved safety measures.
Gorilla Technology Group stated that the system’s advanced video analytics should enable real-time threat identification and response.
