Latvijas Mobilais Telefons (LMT) will deploy 26 traffic monitoring solutions in Riga, Latvia, over the next year to enhance road safety in the capital. The systems will detect violations such as running red lights, illegal use of public transport lanes, prohibited stopping at intersections, and disregarding advanced traffic signals. The first set of devices has already been installed.

The technology includes features like object detection, classification, movement tracking, license plate recognition, and traffic light monitoring. In cases of potential violations, data is forwarded to the Riga Municipal Police and Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD) for review and enforcement.

The systems are being installed at high-traffic intersections prone to dangerous maneuvers, aiming to improve driving culture and reduce accidents. LMT’s solutions have previously been implemented in other Latvian cities and Graz, Austria. The company secured the Riga project through a procurement process.

The system utilizes edge computing, leveraging existing mobile networks and minimizing installation requirements. It can be set up within hours without construction, needing only an electrical connection. This approach should  allow municipalities to adopt smart city technologies without significant infrastructure investments.
