Zaragoza Seeks €9.9 Million for Smart Public Lighting Upgrade to Boost Energy Efficiency

The Zaragoza City Council has approved the second phase of its public lighting modernization project, Reluz y Dos, aiming to secure a €9.9 million interest-free loan from the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE). The funds will be used to replace 9,031 light fixtures with energy-efficient LED technology and upgrade 72 control panels with remote monitoring and management of the lighting network.

This initiative follows the first phase, Reluzes, which is currently in the bidding process and will replace 9,619 light points this year. The smart lighting systems will optimize energy consumption, reduce light pollution, and improve visual comfort while providing real-time data to technicians and city officials.

Once completed, the upgrades are expected to save over €2 million annually and reduce CO2 emissions by 1,307 tons per year. With 85,680 public light points in Zaragoza, 10,447 have already been converted to LED, and the new phase would bring energy efficiency to 34% of the city’s public lighting network.

The project aligns with Zaragoza’s goal of becoming a climate-neutral, zero-emission city by 2030. The municipal budget for 2025 includes a €30.5 million multi-year allocation for further energy efficiency improvements in public lighting.
