E.ON, Germany’s largest distribution grid operator, has completed the deployment of a digital twin across its network, virtually mapping over 700,000 kilometres of grid infrastructure.
Developed on a central data platform using smart grid software from Envelio, the system models more than one-third of the country’s distribution grid and processes data from over 55 million components and 180,000 measurement devices. The digital twin enables rapid grid connection for renewable energy systems such as solar panels, wind turbines, heat pumps, and EV chargers—handling over 410,000 requests in 2024 alone. It also helps identify low-voltage expansion needs, assess grid capacity, and support flexibility planning.
The platform is already in use in E.ON’s networks across Sweden, the Czech Republic, and Poland, with envelio’s software adopted by more than 70 grid operators across Europe.
