The California Independent System Operator (CAISO) is piloting a new generative AI platform developed by Open Access Technology International (OATI), marking the first known use of such technology by a U.S. power grid operator.

The platform, OATI Genie™, is designed specifically for the energy sector and will initially focus on improving outage management. The pilot aims to evaluate how AI can enhance system efficiency by analyzing diverse datasets and streamlining operational workflows.

Genie is hosted in OATI’s private data centers, which comply with NERC CIP standards, addressing cybersecurity concerns often associated with public AI models. The platform supports integration across several OATI systems, including DERMS, microgrid control, energy trading, and transmission planning.
