The city of Houston has approved an $8.5 million plan to replace more than 25,000 aging water meters over the next year as part of efforts to modernize its water utility.
Many of the city’s meters are over two decades old, contributing to billing inaccuracies and compounding issues from widespread water leaks.
Between 2023 and mid-2024, Houston lost an estimated 36 billion gallons of water from leaky pipes, equivalent to the annual supply for Fort Worth. The replacement initiative, led by Houston Public Works, aims to improve billing accuracy and reduce water loss across the system.
