Bahrain Begins Trial Phase of 500 Smart-Camera Traffic Project

The General Directorate of Traffic in the Kingdom of Bahrain has launched the trial phase of a national project to install 500 smart traffic cameras aimed at improving road-safety monitoring and enforcement.

Under a phased rollout, 300 cameras will be installed in year one, followed by 100 in each of the subsequent two years. The contract for the full system has been signed with Beyon Solutions (part of the Beyon Group), which will supply and integrate the AI-powered camera network. While specific investment figures have not been publicly disclosed, the procurement tender calls for the full supply, installation and commissioning of the smart-camera solution and supporting infrastructure.

The trial phase will assess the performance, compatibility with existing traffic-control systems and technical efficiency at selected locations. Upon satisfactory testing, the scheme will expand to additional zones across the country.

This initiative aligns with broader efforts by Bahrain’s Ministry of Interior to modernise the traffic-management architecture, broaden enforcement of traffic-law amendments and leverage advanced monitoring technology to reduce accidents and improve discipline on the roads.
