The city of Chattanooga in Tennessee is installing updated smart-traffic detection systems at multiple intersections as part of a wider effort to reduce congestion and boost safety. The rollout includes installation of GRIDSMART GS3 Fisheye Camera Vehicle Detection Systems by Cubic at key junctions, enabling real-time monitoring of vehicle queues and adaptive signal control.
In tandem, Chattanooga awarded a contract to Ouster Inc. to deploy its BlueCity lidar-based traffic management solution across more than 120 intersections, with the goal of creating the largest lidar-powered smart-traffic network in the U.S. The contract is valued at approximately US $2 million.
The project is concentrated initially along the Highway 153 corridor and other high-traffic segments, with signal retiming and new camera installations underway and completion scheduled for mid-December. The initiative is part of a broader smart-city strategy to leverage traffic data, improve travel times and enhance safety.
