Publiacqua, the water utility serving 1.3 million residents across Tuscany, has announced a major modernization of its water network with the deployment of Itron’s Intelis® wSource™ smart water meters. This initiative is aimed at reducing non-revenue water, improving billing accuracy, and enhancing customer engagement through real-time data collection.
Equipped with advanced leak detection and precise flow monitoring, Itron’s ultrasonic smart meters enable remote readings and proactive maintenance. The technology should allow Publiacqua to swiftly detect leaks, optimize water distribution, and issue real-time alerts for anomalies like broken pipes or tampering. Additionally, the meters will provide detailed consumption insights, ensuring more accurate billing and improved transparency for customers.
The project is part of Italy’s PNRR M2C4-14.2 funding program, supporting digital transformation in essential infrastructure.
This latest deployment builds on Publiacqua’s ongoing efforts to enhance water resilience in Tuscany. In 2024, the utility partnered with Xylem to implement real-time analytics and predictive maintenance tools in the Medio Valdarno area, further reinforcing its water infrastructure. The collaboration with both Itron and Xylem highlights Publiacqua’s comprehensive approach to smart water management, leveraging multiple technologies to ensure efficiency, sustainability, and improved service for residents and visitors alike.
